Budgeting When You're Broke

Budgeting When You're Broke

Suffering from a lack of cash? It's likely that you don't follow a budget that reflects your earnings. Smart budgeting prevents eviction, increased credit card debt, and ruined credit scores. It's never too late to achieve your financial goals — get started now with these 10 steps to make your financial life less stressful.
Avoid Immediate Disasters
Don't be afraid to request bill extensions or payment plans. These requests are often granted. If your biggest worry is eviction from your apartment, talk to your landlord, but, also, see if you can get extensions on any other expenses to free up money for keeping your home. For instance, suppose that your rent is $650 and you're $200 short. Your bundled phone bill and cable bill is $60, your electric bill is $100 and your cell phone bill is $40. If these bill payments are postponed until your next paycheck, you can pay your rent now and avoid eviction.

Review Credit Card Payments and Due Dates
If you are only making the minimum payments on your credit card(s), you are flirting with a disastrous credit score. However, avoiding credit card payments will only worsen your debt.
For example, suppose that your minimum payment on a $1,000 balance is $40. You fail to pay $40 on time, so you are charged a $35 late fee. In addition, your interest on future charges is charged at the default rate of 25%. Now your credit card is even more difficult to pay off. Before you know it, you have an overwhelming collection of piled up late fees and missed payments.
Prioritizing Bills
Go over all your bills to see what must be paid first and then set up a payment schedule based on your pay days. You will want to leave yourself some catch-up time if some of your bills are already late. If this is the case, call the bill companies to see how much you can pay now to get back on track toward positive status. Tell them you are catching up and going on a stricter budget. Be honest about what you can afford to pay. Sometimes it's instinctual to say you'll pay the full amount on your next paycheck, but you may not have the full amount available after other expenses take their cut.
Ignore the 10% Savings Rule, For Now
Stashing 10% of your income into your savings account is daunting when you're living paycheck to paycheck. Balance your budget before starting incremental savings. It doesn't make sense to have $100 in a savings plan if you are fending off debt collectors. Your piggy bank will have to starve until you can find stability in your finances.

Review Your Past Month's Spending
Online banking and online budgeting software help you categorize spending so you can make adjustments. For instance, with online banking, with a few mouse clicks you can categorize your money for expenses, such as dining, food and utilities.
Negotiating Credit Card Interest Rates
If you have good credit, call your credit card companies and ask for an interest rate reduction. If you don't ask, you won't know, as it's unlikely that credit card companies are going to initiate a reduction on their own.
Eliminate Unnecessary Expenses
Do you need to cut back on coffees? Or movies? Or do you often have spoiled groceries? All cutbacks should start with items you wouldn't miss, such as switching car insurance companies to get a cheaper rate, or reducing your fresh food purchases if you find food spoiling before you can eat it. Eating out is even more costly, so examine how much and how often your really need to do this.
Journal New Budget for One Month
Once you've gone through the first eight steps, monitor your progress by journaling for one month. You can do this by noting everything you spend in a notebook, budgeting apps on your phone, or with financial software. How you track your money isn't as important as how much you are tracking. Focus on ensuring that every cent is tracked by dividing your expenses into categories, such as rent, food, clothing and utilities.

Adjust Spending as Needed
If, after journaling for one month, you've found your budget isn't where it needs it be, get prepared to make changes. Look at how much you are over budget and decide where you can cut. Don't rule out items that are viewed as basics, such as groceries, utilities or rent. Cooking from scratch can eliminate the cost of pre-packaged foods, and opting for generic brands over brand names will equal big savings on a cart of groceries. Utilities can be reduced by turning off lights when you leave the room or using a lamp instead of elaborate track lighting. You may be able to negotiate better rent the next time your lease is up, or you could always move to a less expensive place.
Seek Out New Sources of Income
If your current budget doesn't balance or you're barely scraping by, you may need to look at working overtime, getting a second job, or possibly getting a new, higher-paying job. Often there is work that pays more, but the nature of the work is unattractive. You may need to decide if it's better to be unhappy at work or unhappy with debt.
Conclusion
When you're short on cash, a strict budget is your best tool for correcting your situation. Employing sound money management can mean the difference between financial disaster and financial stability.

Romney talks polls, 'character assassination,' and Mass. health law

Romney talks polls, 'character assassination,' and Mass. health law

Mitt Romney took part in three network TV interviews Wednesday night that veered in wildly different directions.
With ABC, Romney addressed polls that show him trailing President Obama, with NBC he promoted the Massachusetts health law that was a model for the national law he has pledged to repeal, and with CBS he accused the Obama administration of "character assassination." Addressing polls, Romney told ABC's David Muir that "Frankly at this early stage, polls go up, polls go down." And he pointed to the first presidential debate - one week from tonight - as a potential turning point in the race.
  .
Asked by NBC News how he can "better connect with Americans," he referred to the universal health care law he signed into law as Governor of Massachusetts. Romney has only rarely referred to the Massachusetts law, which Democrats used as a model for the national health reform law - Obamacare - that Romney has pledged to repeal.
"I think throughout this campaign as well, we talked about my record in Massachusetts, don't forget - I got everybody in my state insured," Romney said. "One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record."
Romney also referenced his church, another rarity during the campaign, although members of his Mormon congregation were featured prominently as character witnesses at the Republican National Convention.
"I think people have the chance, who watched our Republican convention, to see the lives that I've had a chance to touch during my life, to understand that as I served as a pastor of a congregation with people of all different backgrounds and economic circumstances that I care very deeply about the American people, people of different socio-economic circumstances," Romney told NBC.
Separately, in an interview with CBS News, Romney suggested the Obama campaign has engaged at times in "character assassination" against him.
He was asked by CBS News' Jan Crawford about conservatives who say he should be more aggressive and whether he will be in the coming month.
"This is a campaign, not about character assassination, even though that's what I think has come from the Obama camp by and large," he said.
"Do you think the Obama camp engaged in character assassination?," asked Greenberg.
"Oh yeah, sure, they try and completely misrepresent my point of view, along with why I'm in this race, but I think fundamentally the American people are interested in who can make their life better," he said. "Who can make people get better jobs and better incomes. And I can. He's proven that he does not have the capability to do that. I do, I've proven that throughout my career. I think that's what it's going to come down to, so I listen to a lot of advice but frankly I'm going to keep on my message, which is I know how to get this economy going, create jobs, more take home pay for the American people."

Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin hit form

BRING on Chelsea. Born again Andrey Arshavin led the Gunners as their red-hot streak continued.

It was the perfect boost ahead of the titanic clash with European champions Chelsea here at the Emirates on Saturday.
The benefits for Arsene Wenger’s team, who now go to Reading in the last 16, were plentiful.
Olivier Giroud finally broke his duck with a wonderful opener and Theo Walcott rediscovered his touch with a double in only his second start this season.
Olivier Giroud puts Arsenal on the way
LIFT-OVER ... Olivier Giroud puts Arsenal on the way by flicking the opener up and over Murphy

It could have gone wrong, though, when Giroud missed a second-half penalty after two would-be ‘streakers’ got on the pitch and had hapless stewards running all over the pitch to detain them.
But Arsenal, unbeaten in all seven games this term, put on the afterburners and disappeared into the distance.
In his first Arsenal start since January, Arshavin ran the show from start to finish, making three goals and netting one himself.
He was simply sublime.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Coventry arrived winless in League One and bereft of confidence. They put up a brave fight but were consumed by an Arsenal fire.
Wenger wanted a result and a performance.
He got both after giving keeper Damian Martinez, 20, and Swiss Under-19 starlet Martin Angha their debuts.

But for much of the first half, the visitors’ 6,000 fans had most to cheer as the Gunners took 35 minutes to muster a shot on goal.
Francis Coquelin swivelled beautifully to feed Giroud, who pulled the trigger instantly but it went straight at Joe Murphy.
Four minutes later, the pair combined again and this time Giroud finished like a world-class hitman to register his first goal since arriving in the summer for £13million.
Theo Walcott makes it 4-0
Theo Walcott slots the fourth

Just after the restart Arsenal got a penalty as Reece Brown bundled Arshavin over.
Two streakers promptly appeared from the Coventry end and even ref Michael Jones saw the funny side in the two-minute stoppage.
It was not funny for Wenger as Giroud was clearly affected by the wait and had his penalty saved by Murphy.
Callum Ball

And the home side could have paid a heavy price as Richard Wood headed inches wide on 54 minutes. But it was game over three minutes later when Arshavin fed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who boomed in a 28-yarder.
Russian Arshavin soon capped an all-star display with a fine third on 63 minutes.
Nico Yennaris found Giroud who played Arshavin in perfectly to slot home.
Ignasi Miquel scores

Walcott then got in on the act, racing clear to beat Murphy with a crisp finish.
The biggest cheer of the night, though, was for Callum Ball, who tucked in a Coventry consolation. But seconds later Arshavin crossed and Ignasi Miquel headed a brilliant fifth.
Walcott saved the best until last as he ran 50 yards at the death to slot home. It was the kind of goal Arsenal’s previous No 14 used to score.
Now if only he can do the same on Saturday...

New poll shows Obama leads Romney in swing states

New poll shows Obama leads Romney in swing states

Fox News released a new poll Thursday showing that President Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in three battleground states, topping off a week of bad-news polling for the Republican presidential nominee in toss-up states.
The poll, which covered Ohio, Virginia and Florida, shows Obama leading the former governor by seven points in both Ohio (49 to 42 percent) and Virginia (50 to 43 percent). In Florida, Obama leads by five points (49 to 44 percent), which is within the poll's margin of error. Obama won all three states in 2008, marking the first time Virginia voted for a Democratic president since 1964.
In Michigan and Wisconsin, Obama has also opened up a lead against his rival: A CNN poll puts him up eight points in Michigan (52 to 44 percent), and one from Marquette Law School has Obama leading Romney by 14 points in Wisconsin (54 to 40 percent). In August, Obama led Romney in Wisconsin by only three points.
New York Times pollster Nate Silver notes that Obama tends to do better against Romney in polls that include cell phones and use live interviewers instead of automated questions. (About a third of U.S. households are cell phone-only.) Silver writes that Obama has shown a clear lead in the 16 cell phone-inclusive polls of seven top battleground states taken since the convention. (The Fox, CNN and Marquette Law School polls all included cell phones.) On average, he's shown a 5.8 percentage point lead in these surveys. The exception is Colorado, where Obama and Romney are neck and neck.
But there's some evidence that the "bounce" Obama has enjoyed since the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., may be dissipating. The Romney campaign has pointed to the Gallup national tracking poll, which found Romney and Obama in a dead tie this week, and a recent Rasmussen poll showed Romney leading Obama by three points in New Hampshire.
Our poll tracker, which averages all national polls, has Obama leading by a little under four points.

USAIN TO PLAY FOR MANCHESTER UNITED IN FRIENDLY AGAINST REAL

Usain to play for United... Real-ly

Bolt lined up for Madrid friendly

Usain Bolt
Man U-sain ... Bolt as Red sprints past Real stars

OLYMPIC champ Usain Bolt is being lined up to play for Manchester United against Real Madrid.

The sprint king — who is a huge Red Devils fan — could appear in a glittering friendly next season.
Bolt, 25, was guest of honour at United’s first home game of the season against Fulham, when fans cheekily urged boss Sir Alex Ferguson to “sign him up”.
Now Ferguson, 70, has hinted he could make the Jamaican’s lifelong ambition come true.
He told Inside United magazine: “Usain’s a character and a big United fan.
“But it’s interesting he says he’d like to play in a charity game. It could be brilliant, and next year when we play Real Madrid’s Legends again, there could be opportunities to bring him up and see how he does.”
Just last month, Bolt told The Sun he would happily quit athletics for a spot in the United squad.
Fergie also revealed how he cashed in after backing Bolt to win the 100m and 200m at the London Games.
He said: “I must thank him because that was my biggest bet. Bolt was 4/5 to win each of them a week before the Olympics started. It was a brilliant bet.”
Ferguson added: “I watched all the Olympics. For us to get 29 gold medals was terrific. It was probably the most uplifting thing that’s happened in Britain for a long, long time."
