Our God is a Healer

Claris Ojwang: We Miss you and with Faith, we Hold on.

When I learnt about Claris’s story via one of the TV station in Kenya, I was deeply moved. Especially because her experience is something that can happen to any woman, to any mom. It could have happened to my sister to my love. It could have happened to my sister, to my friend, to my colleague. It could have happened to you.

Claris Ojwang
But who is Claris, you ask?
In February this year, Claris Ojwang, 26, was beaming with joy as she and her husband anticipated the birth of their second born. Two weeks to her due date, her husband George accompanied her for an ante-natal visit. Despite her swollen feet, which are characteristic of many pregnancies at that stage, the doctor assured the couple that all was well, though he recommended bed rest for Claris.
But the following day, things went awry. While resting at home, Claris suddenly collapsed and after being rushed to hospital, underwent an emergency CS where her second son, Henry Jude was born. Today, Henry Jude is a bouncing, healthy five month old boy. But sadly, the same cannot be said of his mom. Claris slipped into a coma after the birth of her second born.
Claris had developed pre-eclampsia, a life-threatening pregnancy related condition whose symptoms include high blood pressure, accompanied by protein levels in the urine. Pre-eclampsia usually appears during the second half of pregnancy, and it can be fatal.

Claris's husband George and their two sons.
Today, Claris continues to fight for her life in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi. She has never laid her yes on her son Henry Jude, she has never held him in her arms; he has never suckled from her breasts. Thankfully though, Jude is well taken care of by his father George Ojwang, who has taken to playing the roles of both mom and dad to their two sons – Henry Jude and three-year old Haroun James. All three of them terribly miss the woman in their lives –Claris’s warmth, cheer and laughter. As days go by, they pray and hope that she will recover and return home to them.
Let’s continue praying for Claris’s recovery, and supporting her husband and two boys in any way that we can. So far, she has undergone more than 10 surgeries, and with her hospital bills continuing to soar, George has basically exhausted the family’s savings for these purposes. This, after the insurance company informed him that they would not chip in because his wife’s ailment was pregnancy-related.
So if you’re in a position to help George meet part of the bill, then you’re most welcome to. How can you do so?

The Claris medical bill T-shirts for sale. Available in colors red and black.
There are T-shirts for sale at Ksh 1,200 which can be purchased from the Trendy Mums shop located on the ground floor of Cameo Cinema, Kenyatta Avenue or at the Trendy Mums shop at Remax Shopping Village, Argwings Kodhek rd.
Or you can place your order by calling George on 0721 261 617 or Bernard on 0700 074 448.
You can also MPESA her husband George Ojwang on 0721 261 617
Also note that there will be a fundraising on Tuesday 31 July 2012 at Charter Hall, beginning at 5.30pm.
You can read Clairis’s full story as published in the Daily Nation here.

Wishing Claris a quick recovery

UNDERWATER TOURISM

Construction will soon begin in Dubai for the Water Discus, the first five-star underwater hotel.

As Richard Branson and James Cameron make high-profile submarine dives deep into the ocean and millionaires purchase luxury subs to sit on the decks of their yachts, a growing interest in underwater tourism is fueling a number of out-of-this-world projects.

What a suite will look like at the Water Discus hotel.“People have always been fascinated with what’s underwater,” said Bruce Jones, president of Triton and U.S. Submarines Inc., which is building what hopes to be the world’s first underwater resort in Fiji. Jones, however, has some competition to serve this new booming market.

With the announcement in May that Dubai will also build an underwater hotel, the Water Discus, the race to become the first underwater five-star destination grows fierce. The Dubai proposal will have 21 rooms at least 30 feet below the surface in a giant disc. A disc above the water will have recreational facilities – a spa, garden, and a swimming pool. Other discs will house a helipad and diving center and emergency flotation pods, with a central shaft connecting the upper and lower levels, making the complex look like a spaceship.
The entire hotel can also be raised above the water in event of an evacuation or for repairs – and should tourism go south in Dubai, it can be towed somewhere else.
Dubai previously planned to build the $300 million Hydropolis – a 250-suite underwater resort. But that project collapsed during the economic downturn. This current proposal, backed by Dubai construction company Drydocks World, Swiss brokerage firm BIG Invest Consult, and designed by Poland’s Deep Ocean Technology, will cost between just $50 and $120 million. It's the first of many planned for the region. FOR MORE... click

MIGUNA MIGUNA ONCE AGAIN

Raila's group asks DPP to charge Miguna

A lobby group allied to Raila Odinga's presidential campaign has asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to open charges against Miguna Miguna over allegations that he is privy to ODM’s participation in the 2008 post-election violence.
The Friends of Raila (Fora) group urged DPP Keriako Tobiko to prosecute Miguna for withholding evidence on the post-election violence.
Speaking at the launch of his book, Peeling Back the Mask, on Saturday, Mr Miguna said he was privy to the ODM campaign strategies and was present when the party declared that the 2007 General Election was a contest of 41 tribes against one.
FORA's legal advisor Anthony Oluoch on Monday rubbished Miguna's book as an exaggerated dossier that is ill timed and malicious.
“If indeed Miguna was aware that some MP’s allied to ODM participated in the post-election violence, why didn't he hand the information to the ICC?” posed Mr Oluoch.
FORA Deputy Patron and Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara urged Raila Odinga not to stoop low by responding to the allegations in Miguna's book
Mr Imanyara termed the publication as a joint PNU/G7 project.
“We are not calling for the banning of the book, we are urging Kenyans to buy it, read and make a decision for themselves,” he said.
FORA took issue with the title of the book, which they say is crafted to give the reader the impression that what the book contains is top secret.
The group asked Mr Odinga not to take any legal action against the book because it does not deserve his attention.
“The book is full of trash and Raila will not sink to Miguna’s level,” Oluoch said.

Kenyans set to enjoy faster Internet Speeds

In Summary. The government and nine private firms to implement Long Term Evolution network in one year’s time

Kenyans are closer to enjoying fast Internet speeds following the Treasury’s approval of a public-private partnership to implement the network’s roll-out.
Information permanent secretary Bitange Ndemo has said the Treasury last week gave its nod to a consortium of nine private firms in partnership with the government to implement the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.
“Rolling out LTE should start in a few months. We want to target especially the rural areas that have thus far been technologically marginalised” Dr Ndemo said.
LTE is a fourth generation (4G) mobile network that will provide fast speeds and higher bandwidth for multimedia services .
The roll-out will cost an estimated Sh42 billion. The PS said that some parts of the country will start to enjoy 4G services by the end of this year.
He was speaking in Kikuyu during a site visit of  one of the ICT Board’s Pasha digital villages. He revealed that the nine private firms in the consortium include Kenya’s four main mobile phone operators, hardware manufacturers, Nokia Siemens Networks and Alcatel-Lucent, Kenya Data Networks (KDN), South African mobile operator MTN and an unnamed US telecom firm.
There have been allegations that Kenya’s four mobile operators had been lobbying to exclude the other players from the process. However, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore denied these allegations. “We are not and have never lobbied for any company to be locked out of the process,” he said.
In 2010, Safaricom signed a three-year Sh12 billion contract with Chinese mobile manufacturer, Huawei, to roll out the 4G network. It is not clear whether these plans will be put on hold

Anti-Obama film

Anti-Obama film features his brother

US President Barack Obama’s Kenyan half-brother features in a soon-to-be-released documentary that is intended to damage his re-election bid in November.
Mr George Obama, who lives in Nairobi’s Huruma estate, is interviewed in the film 2016: Obama’s America, according to a report in Monday’s edition of The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie is based on the 2010 book, The Roots of Obama’s Rage by pro-Republican polemicist Dinesh D’Souza, who interviews George on camera.
The youngest of Barack Obama Snr’s children defends his powerful half-brother, rejecting Mr D’Souza’s suggestions that the US President has failed to help poor blood relatives in Kenya.
“I think he has a family of his own,” George tells Mr D’Souza, adding: “He’s got other issues to deal with.”

Want Leisure? Go to Kenya

Islands that have put Kenya on the world’s leisure map

Funzi Keys Resort has been voted several times as one of the six best privately-owned islands in the world. Photo/Correspondent
Funzi Keys Resort has been voted several times as one of the six best privately-owned islands in the world.

In Summary
Kenya’s resorts that have become popular with world famous visitors
  • Funzi Keys Resort, located 35km from Mombasa's Diani beach and on Funzi Island, has been voted several times as one of the six best privately-owned islands in the world.
  • The Majlis Resort on Manda island’s Ras Kitau Bay is the only five-star resort in Lamu.
  • Kizingo Resort on Lamu Island.
  • Rusinga Island Lodge on Lake Victoria.
  • Island Camp, one of the lodges located in Ol Kokwe Island on Lake Baringo.

Little is known about the one kilometre-long and 30 metres wide paradise that keeps royals, renowned actors and actresses periodically jetting into Kenya for holidays.
Yet much can be said about Kenya’s all-inclusive, exclusive private island resorts that are only accessible by boat or ferry.
Located 35 kilometres from Mombasa’s Diani beach and on Funzi Island, is Funzi Keys Resort whose main building stands 17 metres tall and is sandwiched between the pristine white sand, green eucalyptus tree forest and mangroves of Shirazi.
Voted many times as one of the top six privately-owned islands in the world and featured in Conde Nast, a US travel magazine that targets those with a taste for the finer things in life, and also voted in multiple television programmes abroad, Funzi Keys has become a favourite spot for the world’s celebrities who want to escape from busy lifestyles and from the ever intrusive paparazzi in their home countries.
From the clear blue waters that surround the resort during high tide, the white sands, Swahili menu, local materials used for construction that resemble the Omani architecture, hand carved wall designs, an Arab dhow-like pub (resembling the handmade wooden Dhow used by Arab merchants in the East Africa coastal trade in the early 18th century) and antiques such as Sultan of Oman plates, everything around leaves no doubt that one is in an exclusive establishment.
Here, expensive imported wines and spirits flow freely since money is not a problem for the takers. One has the option of a beach front deluxe room going for an inclusive (room, meals and drinks) price of $140 (Sh15,600) per person per night (resident rate) or a bungalow with a sea view and all the amenities that make for a luxurious stay.
These aspects, coupled with feedback from patrons, is what led Claudia Torriani, owner and manager of the resort, to believe they are offering something exclusive to clients at Funzi.
“We offer our clients total freedom here. They leave us saying “we have been Funzied,” she says.
“This is because at Funzi, we have no set time, no rules, no timings, no dress code and no set venue for any activity. Guests do what they want, when they want and how they want. Since many of them lead stressful lives wherever they come from, our task is to help them to detoxicate their mind, body and soul.”
Claudia believes that Funzi Keys will remain a cosy, luxurious home away from home that they are ready to share with the world for years to come.
On the Lamu archipelago sits another private resort with spacious rooms and beamed ceilings, large windows, terraces with spectacular views of the beach and the ocean beyond apart from the manicured gardens and swimming pools.
The Majlis Resort on Manda island’s Ras Kitau Bay is the only five-star resort in Lamu. It was originally part of a set of three private villas, which were converted into a resort.
The villas are perfectly constructed with the archipelago’s natural resources that combine white coral blocks with hand-carved timber.
Lamu Port
The furniture, doors and windows were hand-made by a select group of carpenters who worked at the resort for two years before the opening. But even in all this, Stefano Moccia, the resort’s managing director feels they still need to work more on the details as part of their future plan

THEO WALCOTT WANTS TO WALK OUT OF ARSENAL AS WELL...

Walcott wants to walk out as well

Theo Walcott could follow Robin van Persie's lead

THEO WALCOTT is ready to follow Robin van Persie out of the Arsenal exit door.

The England star, 23, is devastated by Van Persie’s decision not to renew his contract at the Emirates.
Winger Walcott is in an identical position to the Dutch striker, as he is entering the final year of his current deal.
Walcott has always maintained that he would refrain from committing his own future until Van Persie showed his hand.
The two players are extremely close, on and off the field.
Friends claim Van Persie’s decision will have a huge impact on Chelsea target Walcott. Informal talks have already taken place between Arsenal and Walcott’s advisers.
On the table is a new four-year deal that would take his wages of £55,000-a-week to around £80,000.
But Walcott has the option of leaving on a Bosman free transfer next summer or face being sold now if the Gunners refuse to allow him to walk away for nothing.
The only way Arsenal can keep him is to seriously up their offer.
And they must also convince him they are prepared to invest heavily to compete for honours, which they failed to do with Van Persie.

HUNDREDS STRANDED AFTER FERRYOVERSHOOTS RAMP

The MV. Kwale. Photo/LABAN WALLOGA

Hundreds of passengers were stranded for an hour at the Likoni Ferry channel Thursday evening after a ferry over shot a ramp due to high speed and low tides
The ferry, Mv Kwale stalled on the Island side of the channel forcing the Kenya Ferry Service personnel to recall two ferries to ease the increasing number of people and vehicle crossing to the mainland side of the channel.
Traffic started building along Nyerere Avenue leading to Likoni Ferry area, a stretch of about five kilometres from the Central Business District as a result of the hitch.
Stranded passengers interviewed at the ferry were urged by the Coxswain to maintain calm as the management tried to sort the matter.
The MV Nyayo was brought to ease congestion but a truck that had stalled on its way out further added to delays of offloading the ferry.
While the passengers waited to cross the channel, Rama Karisa who had a patient from the Pandya Memorial Hospital blamed the ferry services for the problem.
“I have been on the road for about two hours but the traffic is moving slowly, I don’t know the time that my patient will reach home, “he said.
The Ferry Service returned to normal after 2 hours but the MV Kwale had not left the ramp due to the low tides.

DRIVER OF THE KILLER TRUCK CHARGED

Tobias Mwaluzi Ngure when he appeared in a Mombasa court July 5, 2012. Mr Ngure pleaded not guilty to driving recklessly and causing deaths of 14 people on Mombasa-Nairobi highway at Bonje. LABAN WALLOGA

The driver of a truck that was involved in an accident at Bonje on the outskirts of Mombasa town early Wednesday morning has been charged with causing death through dangerous driving.
The truck crushed a matatu and a private car in the 9am accident leaving fourteen people dead - thirteen of those on the spot.
Tobias Mwaluzi Ngure, who appeared before Mombasa Resident Magistrate Irene Ruguru denied the 14 counts brought against him by the State.
Mr Ngure was released on a Sh1 million bond with a surety of a similar amount and the case was fixed for hearing on August 20.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to some counts before he was cautioned by the magistrate that each count carries a four-year jail term.
He promptly rescinded his decision and the court clerk read the charges to him again.
The charges read that the accused person being the driver of a semi-trailer drove it recklessly, at a speed and in a manner which was dangerous to the public.
He allegedly, while negotiating a sharp corner, lost physical control of the vehicle and veered off his lane to the opposite ones on the dual carriage way and rammed a matatu.
According to the prosecution, the offence is alleged to have been committed on July 4 this year at about 9.50 am at Bonje area near Mazeras on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway

ROBIN VAN PERSIE PLOTS MAN CITY MOVE

Robin van Persie plots Man City move

Robin van Persie
ON HIS WAY ¿ Robin van Persie is set to join Manchester City

FUMING Arsenal feel Robin van Persie is plotting a move to Manchester City after he rejected a new deal.

Arsenal immediately issued a statement suggesting they will force the star, who hit 37 goals for them last season, to see out the remaining year of his contract.
But that would mean letting their skipper leave on a free, when there is a queue of clubs ready to open their cheque books right now.
Among them is Manchester City and Arsenal reckon the Dutch international is angling for a mega-money move to the Premier League champions.
Van Persie’s Dutch agent Kees Vos was spotted with City’s football administration officer Brian Marwood at the Etihad last season

VAN PERSIE QUITS ARSENAL...???

Jack? Theo? Who’s next to go?

Jack Wilshere could be the next Arsenal star to leave
WIL TO STAY? ... Jack Wilshere may want to join Emirates exodus after his skipper leaves
Last Updated: 05th July 2012

IT started with a trickle and quickly became a stream

Robin van Persie’s announcement that he will not be signing a new contract has left Arsene Wenger and his daydreaming directors in a state of shock.

But the captain’s decision to join the Emirates exodus will come as no surprise to the long-suffering supporters who have witnessed the rapid decline of their team.
Was it really only eight years ago that Arsenal’s Invincibles won the Premier League without losing a single match?
That record-breaking title run should have heralded the dawn of a period of utter domination of domestic and European football.
Instead it proved to be the turning point in the fortunes of a once-great club who have been undone by a lack of ambition and a refusal to move with the times.
True, the team did go on to lift the FA Cup the following year in what was to prove captain Patrick Vieira’s final game for the club.
But the trophy cabinet has been bare ever since that penalty shootout victory over Manchester United way back in 2005.
And Vieira’s departure for Juventus signalled the beginning of a mass migration which has since included (very deep breath)... Robert Pires, Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Thierry Henry, Freddie Ljungberg, Jens Lehmann, Gilberto Silva, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, William Gallas, Gael Clichy, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Eboue and Samir Nasri.
Now Footballer of the Year Van Persie wants to add his name to that illustrious list after carrying the team on the back of his 37 goals last season.
The skipper has quite simply run out of patience with Wenger’s worthy intentions and empty promises.
Every year the manager insists his promising young team is finally ready to challenge the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Man City for the title.
And every year they get further away from fulfilling those lofty ambitions.
Sure Arsenal have spent much of the money they have banked from the sale of all their superstars. But the replacements are always that little bit cheaper and never quite as good.
Alex Hleb for Vieira anyone? Eduardo for Henry or Arteta for Fabregas?
Wenger is at it again this time, spending £13million on Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud and a further £11m on Lukas Podolski.
But will either prove capable of filling the gaping hole left by Van Persie’s imminent departure? It seems unlikely.
Henry, Fabregas and Nasri all moved on because they could no longer see a time when they would win major trophies with Arsenal.
Van Persie, an 86th-minute sub in that 2005 FA Cup final, has reluctantly come to the same conclusion.
The Dutchman could not have given much more to the club during his eight years in an Arsenal shirt — yet all his best efforts have come to nothing.
And if Van Persie now feels this way, it is inevitable the next generation of Arsenal stars will soon start questioning their own prospects of silverware.
Theo Walcott, like Van Persie, is out of contract next year and has yet to agree a new deal.
He knows that European champions Chelsea are keen on him and who could really blame him for being tempted?
And what about Jack Wilshere, the most talented English player to burst on to the Premier League scene since Wayne Rooney?
Rooney was just 18 when he left Everton for Manchester United, since when he has won four League Championships, two League Cups and the Champions League.
Wilshere is still only 20 and has plenty of time on his side despite missing the whole of last season with a persistent ankle problem.
Yet how long will he be prepared to wait to win his first trophy with Arsenal?
Maybe Van Persie’s bombshell will be the wake-up call Arsenal need to rouse them from their slumbers.
Maybe Wenger will finally accept he has to pay top money if he wants to sign the likes of Eden Hazard, David Silva or Sergio Aguero.
And maybe Stan Kroenke and Ivan Gazidis will stop panicking about Financial Fair Play and realise the new TV deal will provide Arsenal with riches beyond their dreams.
Just don’t hold your breath.
Robin van Persie did that until he was blue in the face. And look where it got him.
